The Thaw continues at Frieze

The highly reputable Frieze Art Fair (London, 14-17th October) closed on Saturday night amid reports of increased collector interest and purchases.  Numerous sales were reported by established and emerging galleries including a number above the US$1 million mark.  Last year the Fair suffered dramatically, opening exactly one month after the September collapse of Lehman Brothers.  This was in line with the concurrent 70-80% slump in volume of auction sales (Art Tactic - Sept 09).

Can Lorne measure up to Sydney?

The 3rd Lorne Sculpture Exhibition is currently on display (October 17th - November 9th 2009) along the beach front at Lorne on Victoria's Great Ocean Road.  A total of 33 major sculptural works are carefully situated along the coastal path towards the jetty and 17 smaller works are displayed in shopfronts on the promenade.  The artists are of local, national and international significance.  Despite only being in its 3rd year, the Lorne exhibition is of an extremely high standard and demonstrates the great diversity that is current in Australian three-dimensional art practice

A strong attendance during the viewing and a good crowd at the auction augured well for the start of Deutscher and Hackett's second auction of aboriginal art, put together by ex-Sothebys expert Crispin Gutteridge and held on Wednesday night, 14th October.  However, the passing-in of the first two lots indicated that a different direction may be taken.  Three hours later a sale rate of 61% by volume resulted in a $1.1m turnover for the sale.
