Suzanne Jones uses a unique technique of layering delicate paper over painted images on canvas to create rich textural images.  She creates absorbing artworks that appear to materialise from the very nature of the paper that she selects.

‘Somewhere to Hide’ presents a diversity of images with a recurrent theme – the intrinsic nature of human beings to shield ourselves from the world in some way.

Some people hide in small, undetectable ways, others carry a shield emblazoned with forceful emblems. We protect and project our self image for a myriad of reasons, whether it is social status, creative standing, projecting sexuality or success, power or subservience. This exhibition explores these possibilities and introduces us to the work of artist Suzanne Jones.

A background in publishing and a love of the printed word are the intrinsic elements of Jones's chosen style.  "There is something permanent in the printed word that cannot be erased" she says.

Maestro
Suzanne's life has been one of constant change; she has travelled a long journey, moving many times in foreign lands, experiencing the joy of new beginnings and the sadness of separation.  This dynamic lifestyle has impacted her artwork; she absorbs the infrastructure in which she lives and her works contrast wealth and poverty and the survival of the human spirit.

Many of her works reflect the endurance and strength of women faced with advertsity and their ability to cope.  Examining the images portrayed in her works one sees a quiet dignity and strength in the characters but also a fragile vulnerability that betrays their active facade.

Jones's years living in Hong Kong were the catalyst for her creations.  Reading the Chinese-English press in the years of the 'Change-over' fascinated her and the bias and propoganda in these publications provided the stimulus for the creation of a new artistic technique as she began to cut up the daily newspapers and magazines to tell the story from an artistic standpoint. Her respect and fascination with the Oriental culture is a strong theme in this exhibition.

Jones is uncompromising in sourcing the material for her work, sometimes taking months to find the right pieces, resulting in each artwork being truly absorbing and unique.  This remarkable, original artist shows us her passion for visualising and interpreting truth in a world obscured by facade.

"Somewhere to Hide" is an intriguing new way of looking at the world.
